How to Store Oud Oil and Agarwood Chips So They Last (and Improve)
Share
One of the more surprising things about genuine oud oil is that, stored correctly, it doesn't just "keep," it can actually deepen and improve over years, the way a good wine or aged spirit does. Poor storage, on the other hand, can dull even a high-grade oil or dry out chips faster than they should. Here's how to get the aging benefit instead of the damage.
Keep oud oil away from light and heat
UV light and heat are the two biggest threats to oud oil. Both accelerate oxidation, which flattens the oil's top notes and can shift its character toward something duller or sharper than intended. Store bottles in a cool, dark place: a drawer or cabinet away from windows and radiators is ideal. Avoid leaving bottles on a sunny shelf or in a bathroom, where heat and humidity swing throughout the day.
Keep the bottle sealed and minimize air exposure
Oxygen is what actually drives oxidation, so the less air an oil is exposed to, the slower it ages. Keep the cap tightly closed between uses, and if you have a bottle that's mostly empty, consider decanting the remainder into a smaller bottle to reduce the air pocket above the liquid. This is a standard trick among perfume collectors and it works just as well for oud oil.
Use glass, not plastic
Pure oud oil is a concentrated, potent liquid, and over time it can interact with certain plastics in ways that affect purity and scent. Glass, ideally dark amber or cobalt glass that blocks light, is the standard for good reason. All of our oud oils ship in glass for this reason. If you ever decant into a travel container, choose glass there too.
Storing agarwood chips
Chips are more forgiving than oil, but they still benefit from an airtight container away from direct sunlight and humidity. Excess moisture can encourage mold on lower-density chips, while very dry conditions can cause resin to become brittle over long periods. A sealed glass jar or the original packaging, kept in a drawer or cabinet, is normally all you need.
Why aging can actually help
Unlike synthetic fragrance oils, genuine oud oil's chemical complexity means its character can mellow and deepen with a few years of proper storage. Sharper notes soften, and the base becomes rounder. This is part of why serious collectors buy oud oil in advance and let it rest before using it, the same way they might cellar a bottle of wine.
