How to Burn Oud Chips: A Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners

Burning oud chips is one of the most rewarding ways to experience the depth and beauty of agarwood. The ritual itself — preparing the burner, placing the chip, watching the fragrant smoke rise — is a meditative practice that has been cherished across cultures for centuries.

If you are new to burning oud, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know.

What You Will Need

Before you begin, gather these essentials:

  • Agarwood chips — Start with smaller pieces if you are a beginner
  • A burner — Either a traditional charcoal burner (mabkhara) or an electric oud burner
  • Charcoal discs (if using a traditional burner)
  • A lighter or small torch
  • Tongs or tweezers for handling chips

Method 1: Electric Burner (Recommended for Beginners)

Electric burners offer precise temperature control and a cleaner experience, making them ideal for those new to oud.

  1. Place the burner on a stable, heat-resistant surface away from flammable materials
  2. Set the temperature — Start at a low setting (around 180-200°C). Lower temperatures release more subtle, nuanced notes
  3. Place a small chip on the heating plate — one small piece is often enough for an entire room
  4. Wait patiently — Within minutes, you will notice the first wisps of fragrant smoke
  5. Adjust temperature as needed — Gradually increase for more intensity, or keep low for a gentle, long-lasting experience
  6. Enjoy — A single quality chip can provide fragrance for 30 minutes to several hours depending on size and grade

Method 2: Traditional Charcoal Burner

The traditional method offers a more authentic, ceremonial experience.

  1. Light the charcoal disc — Hold it with tongs and apply flame until it begins to spark and glow
  2. Place in the burner — Set the glowing disc in your mabkhara or incense burner and wait 2-3 minutes for it to become fully hot (covered in grey ash)
  3. Add the oud chip — Using tongs, place a small piece of agarwood directly on the charcoal
  4. The smoke will rise immediately — The fragrant smoke signals that the resin is heating and releasing its aromatic compounds
  5. Fan gently if desired — Wafting the smoke toward you or around the room is a traditional gesture of welcome

Tips for the Best Experience

Start small. A single chip the size of your fingernail can be surprisingly powerful. You can always add more, but you cannot reduce the scent once the room is full.

Ventilation matters. While oud smoke is beautiful, ensure your space has some airflow. A slightly open window creates the perfect balance — enough to circulate the scent without dispersing it too quickly.

Experiment with temperature. Different temperatures reveal different facets of the same chip. Lower heat brings out sweeter, more delicate notes, while higher heat produces bolder, smokier tones.

Quality over quantity. A small piece of premium agarwood will always outperform a larger piece of lower-grade wood. At Noble Aroma, every chip is hand-selected for purity and aromatic richness.

Store your oud properly. Keep agarwood chips in an airtight container, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Properly stored, quality oud can retain its fragrance for years — even decades.
